Our Bromley workshop is equipped with a wide range of specialist tools, from traditional metal forging and welding equipment to a state-of-the-art CNC plasma cutting machine.

Established in 1994 by owner Glen O’Neill, Flaxton Iron Ltd creates metalwork that has a distinctive industrial style. Wrought iron is made by repeatedly heating steel in a forge and working it with tools to deform it. Flaxton Iron are wrought iron experts and have decades of experience in the art of blacksmithing.

precision cutting

At Flaxton Iron, we offer high-speed CNC plasma cutting at our site in Bromley, Christchurch with fast turnaround times. We can CNC Plasma cut Mild Steel from 1mm up to 25mm and stock all thicknesses. Specific grades can be obtained quickly to ensure you get what you want. We can work up to our maximum table cutting dimensions of 1.5m x 3m, larger parts can be spliced together. Items can also be CNC machined for clean holes, threads, chamfers, pockets etc. We can cut from hand sketches, JPEG files, and common CAD formats.

Mobile Kitchens and Food Truck Fabrication

Flaxton Iron design and manufacture food trailers, mobile kitchens and custom-built mobile cookers. They have built a reputation as Canterbury's leading food truck fabricator and food trailer manufacturer. A refitted 1973 Bedford truck for Base Woodfired Pizza is kitted out with an Argentinian barbecue, chillers, hot and cold water system, fold-out bar stools and a full service counter.

Restaurant Fit-outs

At Mumbaiwala, the Christchurch restaurant’s upscale Indian street food is matched by rusted, industrial-style ironwork, while nearby at Joe’s Garage in the new Hoyts complex, metal sculptures hang prominently from the ceiling.

Over at the Christchurch Arts Centre Cafe Bunsen, Glen and the team transformed the steel table tops with an acid wash to create the look of polished concrete. And their influence is evident throughout Tony Astle’s new bar Chiwahwah, from the rustic steel planter boxes to the skull beer tower to the small metal hands holding lights.

Flaxton Iron has been involved in many restoration and renovation projects particularly since the Canterbury Earthquakes and have considerable experience in repairing antique ornamental ironwork and re-creating historic designs for replacement gates and railings.

We prefer to be engaged early in the project so we can advise on practical options and help influence scope and design for the repair or replacement ironwork.

Our philosophy with vintage ironwork is always to try and restore using minimal and sympathetic repairs, however sometimes due to corrosion and general condition the only viable option is to manufacture replacements. In this case we use modern mild steels together with traditional skills and techniques to replicate designs of the original ironwork.

CORTEN STEEL

Corten (COR-TEN) is a weathered sheet steel product that does not require painting or galvanising. The molecular structure of the steel produces a uniform and stable rust-like surface, forming a protective layer. This makes Corten an attractive option for low-maintenance outdoor furniture and fittings.

Flaxton Iron frequently uses Corten as the material of choice for outdoor planters, gate panels, doors, and sculptural pieces. It is used also extensively in signage and in bar and restaurant fit-outs.

Our CNC Plasma cutting capability allows us to cut intricate shapes such as logos, text and graphics out of sheet steel, including Corten and stainless steel.
